The Battle of Digital Music

Tuesday, August 17th, 2004

RealPlayer wants to play hardball with iTunes, by marking down prices of individual songs to $.49 and full albums to $4.99. This is timed alongside the release of a new RealPlayer version that supports Harmony, Real’s way of letting you use iTunes downloaded tunes in their RealPlayer software. The digital music age is teething, it should be interesting to see how it progresses over the coming years. :)

CSS Optimizer Service

Monday, August 16th, 2004

Just spotted this CSS Optimizer service at Flumpcakes that should prove useful. It shaved off 2kB off my CSS file. While not a lot, it certainly adds up over time. Pretty nifty, although if you don’t use the pretty print feature (turning it off compresses even more), be sure you keep a local copy that is readable to edit.

Closer To Free iPod

Saturday, August 14th, 2004

You may remember I posted about the FreeiPod.com site that has been making the rounds on the net as people have decided to try it, and actually gotten their free iPod (or mini iPod). So I decided to try it. You need 5 people to compete offers, which is quite simple, and you get a free iPod, with free shipping.

I’m up to 3 completed offers, and only need 2 more. If you’re interested in getting a free iPod too, you can start right here.

Don’t worry if you’re skeptical, I was too when I heard about it. These kind of offers usually are scams, but this is the real deal. For proof and information, check these sites:

Your Name Key To Sexiness

Wednesday, August 11th, 2004

According to this research, I should be getting laid all the time:

“Men with “front vowels” in their names — sounds formed at the front of the mouth like the “a” in Matt — were considered sexier than men with “back vowel” sounds like the “au” in Paul, she concluded.

No such luck. Maybe I should wear nametags everytime I go out?

Poop Is Life

Wednesday, August 11th, 2004

My roommate, in her infinite wisdom, decided to share with me this morning two important morsels of life that I have somehow missed in my 25 years of living:

  1. Poop is life.
  2. The birds and the bees song is not about sex, but about poop

I’m already having a crappy day (pardon the pun.)

Internet Explorer 6 To Turn 3 Years Old

Friday, August 6th, 2004

This August 27th, will mark the 3 years since Internet Explorer 6.0 was made available to the public. By internet standards, that is a very long time. Since then, Internet Explorer has gone through one service pack, and a zillion security fixes, and no feature updates/additions. The best thing to happen to the browser is the Google toolbar courtesy of Google.

By contrast, Mozilla Firefox isn’t even that old (came out in late 2002), yet it has gone through changes rapidly, adding features that far exceed Internet Explorer’s capabilities, and has been the most secure browser to surf the web on. Since using Firefox, I’ve seen zero popup ads, and zero adwares injected into my system. It also has full support for web standards, which IE doesn’t, thus showing you the web the way it’s meant to be seen.

The Legacy Of Wikipedia

Friday, August 6th, 2004

If I were trapped on an island, and I had to choose 1 single website, I’d choose Wikipedia - an online, free encyclopedia. It is the website that conveys what the internet is all about - free knowledge. It has been an invaluable resource to me countless times, and I wish to share that positiveness by posting about it here.

For example, today I decided to learn about Caffeine and why I go through headaches and weakness after I try to quit the addiction after drinking sodas for 5 years daily. I’ve learned a lot, and discovered why I get headaches, and now I truly want to quit drinking sodas, and retake control of my body.

I had just read an interview with the Wikipedia founder at Slashdot, and felt compelled to write this entry to show my appreciation for what I consider the most invaluable website in all the internet.
