One of the things I miss about living out in the middle of nowhere is driving down the country roads. Twisting and turning down narrow roads, past farmlands and forests. On one particular day, the road was all my own, it was a pretty day out, and I had my favorite song blaring through the speakers. I ended up recording a video of the journey, and today I dubbed the song over the original audio because you could barely hear the song over the wind (I had the windows down.) I also slowed the video down a little, for emphasis.
So here you go, a drive through the backwoods of Florida:
My roommate’s computer broke a few days ago, and after diagnostic testing, discovered it was the motherboard that died. No surprise there, considering it was my old computer and it was pushed to the limit since the day I got it. So I did some research and tried to get new parts (motherboard, CPU, memory) that are faster, but still on a tight budget. I spent $200, and got her a system that is twice as fast, and should hopefully last a long time. Here’s the parts that I got: AMD Sempron 2800+ processor, MSI K8MM-V motherboard, and 512MB PC3200 Kingston DDR2 memory.
Well today while putting it together, I ran into one problem after another. First the stupid heatsink/fan retention mechanism was a pure bitch trying to secure over the processor. While using force on it, I had to be careful not to apply too much pressure, otherwise it’d crack the processor core, and that’d be $75 down the drain. Then when I got that on, the hard drive kept being recognized as a slave, rather than a master. It took 2 hours of diagnostic tests to figure out I should just pop in another hard drive, transfer the data from the old hard drive to the replaced one, and ditch the old one.
Okay, fine, got that set up, but then the video card gives me a fit. Not my fault though, ATI has some asstacular drivers, so I just went with the on-board video, which works just as well. Finally, the wireless network card software kept BSOD’ing the system, so I had to uninstall that and install generic drivers for it. Total time: 7 hours. Seven bloody hours for such a simple job, but it seems Murphy’s Law was in a harassing mood for me today.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic has the best first-person melee combat in a game I’ve played yet. The thing that makes it stand out is that the character you play has a real body. Real physics, weight, balance, strength, stamina, all factors most games doesn’t even touch upon, especially not in an action-oriented game. It’s refreshing and fun, and adds a new gameplay element that gives the game more immersiveness.
Check out this video I recorded when I played through earlier so you can see what I’m talking about:
Ever read a word that totally makes you forget how it is properly spelled, even though it’s something utterly simple? For example, I never had a problem when some people use their/there/they’re improperly, I always know which is the right one. Or “looser”, I never forget it’s spelled loser, and usually snicker at the kids who types it like that when they try to insult someone.
However, I read a review on a website where someone says a movie is hysterious. It took me a good minute to remember that it’s spelled hysterical. Or hilarious. Whichever one the guy was trying to go for in the review.
One thing I really like about Moby is that he doesn’t restrict his music taste to any one style or genre. He just goes with what feels and sounds good, and that’s why I think the whole Play album is extraordinary. Not one song is alike, it spans a number of genres, and can never get boring. One of my favorite songs on the album is My Weakness, a chillout ambient tune that’s both pretty and haunting.
Something I noticed when puttering about in the admin interface for this blog:
Good Blimey was started in July 2003 (the archives goes back to October 2003 because I lost data when I changed from MovableType, to pMachine, and finally to Wordpress which I’m still using now. I’ve nearly posted 500 entries, yet people have commented quadruple as much. That’s a lot of feedback, which I really appreciate getting. And the spammers are really desperate to tell me about Viagra, mortgage deals, and how to enlarge my penis (much to the shock and horror of women who’ve been with me.)
Angel Pumping Gas was largely thought to be by The Postal Service, but it’s actually by a band formerly called Postal, and now known as Lindsey Pool. It’s an insanely catchy love song with great lyrics that I find myself playing it often.
